How do I know if my friend is really suicidal?

Take any conversation about death or plans to harm themselves or wishes to die seriously. If it is an attempt to get attention then perhaps your action will let them know you really care and will help them get the attention they need.

Do not be afraid to ask about suicidal thoughts. It will not plant ideas in their heads to ask about plans. Often a person has fleeting suicidal thoughts but comes to terms with these feelings in a positive way. Sometimes these thoughts are very frightening to them. By approaching the subject, the person often feels relieved to talk about it. Of course, if serious suicidal thoughts are present, you must get professional help immediately. Even if the person has asked you to keep their plans a secret or confidential, it would not be a good friend to keep this secret. It would be a decision you would forever regret if the person carried out the plan. If you think a person is suicidal, take them to the emergency room of any hospital. Get help immediately.

How do I know when a person is a risk of suicide?

You can ask these three questions to find out about the intensity of the feelings.

F - Frequency: How often have you felt this way?
(More on than off. NOT a good sign.)

I - Intensity: On a scale of one to ten how bad is it?
(Anything seven or above. NOT a good sign)

D - Duration: How long have you been feeling this way?
(Greater than two weeks. NOT a good sign)

Two out of three of the above. Get help! Please call one of the resources listed above or call Priscilla Kelly at 321.356.5115

Always ask: “Do you have a plan?” If they do, ask about the plan and get help!
